Autozone Corporate History

Autozone was founded in the year 1979. The company has been operational for more than 40 years now. The founder of the company was Pitt Hyde. The company was originally a part of a wholesale grocery shop known as Malone & Hyde. The former name of the company was Auto Shack. After Malone & Hyde was sold off to the Fleming Companies of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the name of the company was changed to Auto Zone. The name change was due to a lawsuit that was brought over by Tandy Corporation, for infringing the Tandy’s Radio Shack trademark. The first store of the company was opened in the year 1979, and the first day sales of the store were totalled around $300. By the year 1981, the company had opened almost 73 stores in 7 different states as well. The number of stores increased to nearly 184, around 13 different states, in the year 1984.
