The founder of the company, along with his brother Lewis Rudolph had started working for his uncle, who had owned a general store in Kentucky, USA. The store used to sell a wide variety of goods, including doughnuts as well. In the year 1933, a secret recipe for yeast-raised doughnuts was developed. The secret recipe had come from a French chef. The founder of the company used to sell doughnuts mainly via bicycle only.
