Grocery Outlet was founded in the year 1946. The company has been operational for almost 73 years now. The founder of the company was James Read. The founder of the company used to buy government surplus food products and then later sold them in previously vacant stores throughout San Francisco, USA. The former name of the company was Cannery Sales. In the year 1970, the company had acquired Globe of California and then renamed it Canned Foods as well. Canned Foods started selling closeout, factory second, and also discounted products as well. Then in the year 1971, Canned Foods had signed its first agreement with a supplier, which was known as Del Monte Foods. The company then later signed agreements with entities such as ConAgra, the Quaker Oats Company, and also Revlon. Canned Foods had opened its first independent store in Redmond, Oregon, USA, in the year 1973.
